Sketchbook – bushtit birthday card

Bushtit birthday card

Bushtit (Psaltriparus minimus)
ink on arches cold pressed | 7 1/4″ x 6″

Bushtits are frequent and favourite visitors to our studio window bird feeder so it was a fitting subject for a handmade birthday card for my boyfriend. We share a studio so I had to be sneaky and paint this really quickly while he was out of the room for a few minutes.

Sketchbook – Bowen Island Garden

Bowen Island Garden | July 18, 2010 | watercolour on Arches cold pressed, 140 lb, 7″x10″

This year, I volunteered during the PPP tour (Bowen Island’s garden tour) with my mum. I was stationed in a lovely English style garden on Adams road, directing garden-visitor traffic toward one of the many little paths that looped through the two acre property. This was my view.

Sketchbook – Sooke Potholes

Sooke Potholes, June 26, 2010 | watercolour on Arches hot pressed, 140 lb, 7″x10″

It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to continue these little sketches – I’m very rusty. Still got about 980 bad paintings to go before I do a good one. This one was done last week on the way home from a bike ride up the Galloping Goose trail to the Sooke Potholes on Vancouver Island.

Sketchbook – Fake Collective Nouns for Domestic Dogs

Over the past 10 years, I’ve lost my way with drawing. And I’ve lost what little aptitude I had for ink. I’ve come up with a little project to get me back in tune with the hand/eye skills – it’s a series based on fake collective nouns for domestic dogs that Darren and I have come up with. So far, I have a list 25 breeds long. First up on that list:

A Puddle of Shar Peis

– example: There is a puddle of Shar Peis pooling by the backdoor.

Sketchbook – Go By Bus

Go By Bus | pencil, digital & ephemera

This is a little Photoshop exercise using a doodle from one of my sketchbooks.

This creature needs a name along the lines of this fish – the sarcastic fringehead. The sarcastic fringehead was on the recently aired ‘Fish’ episode of David Attenborough’s Life and I’m not sure what delights me more – its name or its looks.

Here’s another clip of a pair of battling sarcastic fringheads.

Sketchbook – Fox

I’m starting to experiment a little with approaches to colour for the book I’m working on. I’m neck deep in working the drawings out still so I haven’t allowed myself to fully delve into playing with ink and paint yet. But this was a quick little 15 minute thing I whipped up this morning. After labouring over getting drawings right, it’s nice to just ignore that aspect completely and just play with an idea.
